Chet Douglass

Chet Douglass

Age: Approx. 16-17

Job: A senior school student attending an all boys bordering school

Special Relations: Gene, Phineas, Bobby, and Leper

Interesting Facts: He is a really smart guy that is really good in the academics department. He also enjoys sports, like blitzball, and attending every meeting at the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session.

While reading A Separate Peace, I figured that Chet kind of reminded me of Jimmy Neutron. Douglass reminds me of Jimmy Neutron because he is a boy genius who knows probably about anything in those textbooks he studies. He also is the top student in most of his classes, especially in trigonometry, other courses involving math, and he even knows how to read a book in several different languages.

"I became quite a student after that. I had always been a good one, although I was'nt really interested and excited by learning itself, the way Chet Douglass was. Now I became not just good but exceptional, with Chet Douglass my only rival in sight." (Knowles 54)

"When we read Candide it opened up a new way to Chet, and he continued hungrily reading Voltaire, in French, while the class went on to other people." (Knowles 54)

Chet Douglass is your typical nerd, but he is also involved with other school activities that are not so nerdyish. Since he is so smart, Gene started a rivalry against him about how he thinks he shows off his intelligence during classes. Chet does not know of the rivalry because Gene kept the competition to himself. Chet also seems to be carried away by his fascination of certain topics he learns, sometimes he gets so fascinated that he failed on a couple of tests not involving those topic that he enjoys the most, like the tilting planes of solid geometry.

The theme that Chet is most similar with is his actions of escaping from reality. I think that his interests in his studys have seperated him from the social world. It's a good thing that he studies, but he needs to have a certain amount of balance in everything, like hang out with friends.
